Morton not selected to board
Local educator passed over for state position

Steamboat Springs — Though she made it to the final round in the selection process, Olive Morton was not chosen as the newest member of the state Board of Education in Congressional District 3.
Morton said she was somewhat disappointed that she was not chosen, but she had not expected to serve for very long even if she had been picked. The term would have ended at the end of this year and she would not likely have run again.
Pat Chlouber, R-Leadville, who represented District 3 in Colorado until about a month ago, was appointed to a national position in the Department of Education by U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige, opening a seat.
Morton, the director of community education at Colorado Mountain College and the chairwoman of the Routt County Republican Party, was chosen from a field of 15 applicants to be interviewed by the state Board of Education for a seat on the board. After interviews on Saturday, the board chose Pamela Suckla, a rancher and former school board member from Slickrock.
Morton, who served for eight years on the Hayden School Board, is planning to retire from CMC next month. She hopes to travel and maintain her chair position on the Routt County Republicans, among other things.
