Beard-growing contest a draw

— The students of Hayden High School gathered at an assembly Friday morning to see the winner of a beard-growing contest.

Originally, seven teachers participated, racing Principal Nick Schafer to see who could grow the best and biggest beard.

Schafer announced the challenge at a teachers meeting and the word quickly spread through the school.

The winner was to receive $50.

By the end of the two-month-long contest, only math teacher Leif Jacobsen was left in the running.

"The other teachers' wives didn't like their beards, so they shaved," Schafer said. "It is kind of anticlimactic."

The assembly opened with a "Do's and Don'ts of the Dress Code" skit by the high school's speech class.

The beard contest was called a draw and the class was dismissed for the day so students could go skiing, bowling or swimming in Steamboat Springs on the last day before Christmas break.

Hayden High School students return to class Jan. 6.
