Steamboat couple takes championship
Monday, August 12, 2002
Steamboat Springs This is Janis and Bill McGinnis first summer in Steamboat Springs.
But they introduced themselves to the local tennis community by winning the 3.0 mixed doubles division at last weekend's 2002 Steamboat NTRP Tennis Championships.
Both Janis and Bill play in local leagues at the Tennis Center and Janis subs at the Health & Recreation Center when she gets the chance.
But this weekend's win was the first major title for the couple since they moved here earlier this summer from the Denver area.
"This was a very competitive tournament," Janis said. "Having it here in Steamboat makes local players step up their game."
Janis said the win was even more special since her husband is recovering from a heart attack he suffered just eight weeks ago.
"We were kind of testing the waters," Janis said. "Everything went really well."
The NRTP tournament was the largest held in Steamboat Springs this summer. More than 300 players took part in the event, which was played at the tennis center and other area courts including those at the Ranch at Steamboat, Walton Village Condominiums, Snowflower Condominiums and the Catamount Ranch and Club.
"We were blessed with great weather, " Tournament Organizer Jim Swiggart said. "It was also essential to have our four new hard courts and the help of more than 15 volunteers from the local tennis community. This event is known as a premier tennis vacation weekend in the Intermountain Region."
The only other champion from Steamboat Springs was Meg Tully in the women's 3.0 division. She defeated Julie Stogsdill of Fort Collins in a 6-3, 6-0 finals match.
