Basketball camps set for younger athletes later this month

— It's never too early to start thinking about basketball, and high school coach Kelly Meek will offer young players a chance to hone their basic skills during camps this month.

The Sailors Basketball Camp will take place May 15-17 for boys and May 28-30 for girls. The camp is for players ranging from third grade through seventh grade. The camp will stress basic skills and will give young players a chance to get acquainted with the high school coaching staff as well as many of the boys team's returning lettermen.

"The guys wanted to get involved this year and I think everybody from our team is pretty excited about the chance to work with these young players," Meek said.

The cost to attend the camp is $30 (which includes a basketball) and registration forms are available at all Steamboat Springs elementary and middle schools. Meek said forms will also be on hand at the high school.

Coaches instructing the camp will include Chris Adams, Mike Sherrill, Jason Patrick and Meek.

The Sailors' head coach also said all seven of the team's returning players from last year would be on hand to coach.

The girls camp, which runs May 27-29, will feature the same coaching staff as well as the same high school players.

"This is something that we used to do but haven't in a couple of years," Meek said.

The camps will take place at the high school. Sessions will begin at 3:45 p.m. all three days and end at about 6 p.m.
