Monday, April 15, 2002
Steamboat Springs The two-foot high trophy that is awarded to the top team in the adult division I basketball league is proudly displayed at the TIC offices this week.
A week ago the TIC Red Team defeated the Green Waves in the end-of season championship game to earn the top league honor and TIC's first basketball title.
"They only lost two games all season," TIC captain Wade Chotvacs said of the Green Waves. "Both of those losses came to us."
Chotvacs' pride in the trophy is multiplied, since this was the first time in the many years that TIC has had a team, that he can remember a basketball team sponsored by the company winning an adult recreational basketball league title.
This year TIC sponsored the Red Team in the upper (division I) league and the Blue team in the lower (division II) league.
"We were a .500 ball club last year," Chotvacs said. "But we got a few new guys this year, and as a whole, everybody on the team was very dedicated."
The win was also special since the TIC team knocked off the regular-season champions, the Green Waves, in the championship contest.
The Green Waves finished the league's regular season with a 9-1 mark the only loss in the regular season was to TIC.
TIC Red finished in a tie for second place with the Lakers at 8-2.
In division II action, Steamboat Resorts won the title by defeating the Rat Pack in the championship game.
In addition to basketball titles, the Parks and Recreation department also handed out titles in two other winter sports.
Creekside earned the indoor adult soccer title by beating Backdoor Provisions in the championship game, 13-6.
The volleyball crown went to the Sheep Dogs who topped CMC three games to two in the best-of-five championship match.
The championship week brought an end to the winter adult recreational season here in Steamboat Springs.
The summer season, which included softball and soccer, is expected to start in June.
