Ward, McCarthy earn school honors

Steamboat Springs High School has recognized cross-country runners Daniel Ward and Ben McCarthy as the first recipients of the Sports Person of the Week honors.

Cross-country coach John Smith said the two exemplify true sports person despite their very different personalities.



“One is a future drill sergeant, the other is a comic orator,” Smith said.

However, the coach said both show up every day with the single purpose of making themselves better athletes and better people.



The example they set inspires teammates to excel themselves, not only in competition, but in the classroom as well, the coach said.

They lend a helping hand or encouraging voice to whomever may need it, whether it is a teammate, competitor or their coach.

Steamboat Middle tops West Grand

Middle school quarterback Josh Lorimer ran for a touchdown and threw for two more as the eighth-grade Steamboat Springs football team rolled to a 38-8 win over West Grand Tuesday night.

Lorimer was eight-for-eight in the game. Wide receiver Scott Peterson proved to be a favorite target pulling in two of the receptions.

Running backs Thomas Allen and Clay Whiddon each ran for touchdowns in the game.

Sheepdog trials to air on PBS TV

MEEKER The Meeker Sheepdog Trials and a longtime player in the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series will be featured as part of three new episodes of the award-winning PBS series the Spirit of Colorado.

The episodes, which are set to premier in October, are produced by Rocky Mountain PBS and celebrate the people, places and events that make our state special.

On Oct. 6, the series will highlight the Meeker Sheepdog Trials, a bison roundup and the relocation of native big horn sheep in the San Juan Wilderness.

On Oct. 13, the series will feature the ranch of rodeo stock contractor Harry Vold. Vold has been used for many years by the PRCA rodeo series in Steamboat Springs and his family still provides stock for the rodeo though Dona Vold Larsen’s Broken Arrow Rodeo Co.

PBS is available locally on KRMA-TV.

Officials needed for school sports

The Yampa Valley Basketball Officials Association is looking for a few new recruits this season to oversee high school and middle school basketball games.

President Loren Hochhalter said the association is looking for officials 17 years of age and up.

Officials are paid and reimbursed for mileage expenses associated with traveling between games.

The Association handles games for Soroco, Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Meeker and Moffat County. Officials will be responsible for both high school and junior high games.
