Locals can get involved in relief efforts


— Since the terrorist attack on the United States, Steamboat Springs residents have looked for ways they can become involved in relief efforts. Below is a listing of events, fund-raisers and charitable organizations related to the recovery effort:

SYMPOSIUM Colorado Mountain College's Alpine Enrichment program will present "Terrorists, Tragedy and Tolerance" a community symposium and dialogue for discussion at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Alpine Campus Gym.The event is free and open to the community.

BLOOD DRIVE A blood drive is scheduled Oct. 2 at the Steamboat Springs Airport. To schedule an appointment, call 879-2081.

STUFFED ANIMALS Danielle Stauffer of Steamboat Springs, a fourth-grader, is organizing a stuffed animal collection effort. Boxes are available at Steamboat schools, Clark's Market and City Market. The stuffed animals will be sent to children who are victims of the terrorist attacks.

RED, WHITE AND BLUE Steamboat Springs Middle School will sponsor a red, white and blue day today. For more information, call the school at 879-1058.

UNITED WAY The United Way's September 11 Fund seeks cash donations to help victims of the terrorist attacks. Donations may be sent to: The United Way, Park Avenue, New York, NY, 10016 or call (800) 710-8002. Also, in-kind service donations are being accepted. Please call (800) helpnow.

FNBR First National Bank of the Rockies has joined with the Colorado Bankers Association in organizing a relief fund. All contributions collected by FNBR will be directed to the Red Cross to help attack victims and their families.

Donations are being accepted at the Hayden office, 252 Jefferson Ave., and at the branch in Oak Creek. Checks may be made payable to the Colorado Relief Fund for the Victims. Call First National Bank of the Rockies at 276-3731 for more information.

ALPINE BANK Alpine Bank in Steamboat Springs is accepting cash donations to benefit the victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks. Donations may be made at the bank branch, 1901 Pine Grove Road, Steamboat Springs, 80477. For more information, call the bank at 871-1901.

NEW YORK AID The New York Times has provided the following list of nonprofit agencies that are accepting donations that will benefit victims as well as relief workers:
