Volleyball team advances at tournament

— The Steamboat Springs volleyball team came out strong Friday at the district tournament against league foes Delta and Rifle at Cortez.

The third-seeded Sailors defeated the Panthers 15-5, 15-4 in the first match Friday.

"From start to finish, we played pretty strong," Sailors head coach Wendy Hall said. "We kind of dominated both matches."

The Sailors then squared off against the Bears, but Steamboat soundly defeated Rifle 15-5, 15-2 as well.

Hall said the team looked good on the court.

"It was nice to see them play with so much confidence," she said.

Steamboat will face second-seeded Montezuma-Cortez today in the last game of pool play, and the semifinal match will be played this afternoon.

"I hope we step in there and compete as hard as we can and see what happens," Hall said.

The top three finishers in this weekend's district tournament will advance to the regional tournament next weekend.
