Despite lack of time on the ice, skaters finish big

— After a summer of traveling around the state, two Steamboat Springs figure skaters cashed in during the Southwestern Regional Championships Oct. 3 to 6.

Jenny Spencer finished in sixth place out of 16 skaters in here division. Katie Krueger placed eighth out of 15 skaters in her division.

Figure skating coach Kim Haggarty said these skaters have beat the odds this year and recorded great results at their first regional championships in the state of Colorado despite the lack of ice time.

"Jenny and Katie have not been on the ice consistently since the rink closed in May last season," Haggarty said. "The skaters have practiced at Denver University, Breckenridge and Vail."

The coach said the skaters practiced at those locations two or three days per week. Other skaters in the region were on the ice five or six days a week.

"Both skaters skated near flawless programs and had a great showing for their first regional. They represented Steamboat well," Haggardly said.

The Steamboat Springs Figure Skating Club had 60 members last season. This year numbers are down a bit, but it's not too late to register.
