County to choose consultant

Firm sought to aid in hiring of information systems director

— Routt County plans to hire a consulting firm to help fill one of the highest-paid positions within the county.

Today, the Routt County Board of Commissioners will pick one of two Denver firms to help the county fill the vacant director of information systems position.

The county will choose between Tiger Technology Consultants or Creative Financial Staffing, which has sent in a bid of $4,000.

Tiger Technology Consulting is estimating its work will cost the county $2,400, but the cost does not include travel expenses, said Commissioner Nancy Stahoviak.

The position became available when Brad Barkey resigned Sept. 30.

Barkey, who held the position for more than five years, said he needed to go in a different direction.

"I'm proud of the things we accomplished while I was there," said Barkey, who now works for Northwest Data Servicing. "We accomplished quite a bit, and there is a lot more for the county to accomplish."

Since the job became available, the county has received about 150 resumes.

"We are hoping to fill this position as soon as possible," Stahoviak said.

Because the job is so demanding and technical, the county is seeking the help of a consulting firm.

"After a while, all the resumes start to look alike," Commissioner Dan Ellison said. "It makes sense for us to do this."

The consulting firm will help a selection committee go through all of the resumes and create a short list, Stahoviak said.

The selection committee consists of Commissioner Doug Monger, County Manager Tom Sullivan and Assessor Amy Williams.

The selection committee expects to interview potential candidates the first week in December, said Chris Hensen, county personnel director.

Since Barkey's resignation, Sullivan has been overseeing the seven-member department, Hensen said.

Over the past eight years, the Information Systems Department has grown more than any other county department.

In 1993, the department consisted of one half-time position, but now the department consists of the director position and seven full-time positions, Stahoviak said.

Commissioners said it is important to find the right person for the job because the position is demanding.

The director must ensure the county's computer network and software is maintained and continually updated by technology that is constantly evolving.

"This is a challenging position, because every department wants something new," Stahoviak said. "It's important to have a person who can review these requests to determine which projects are critical."

Said Barkey: "It is a challenge to match the resources of the county with the demand. That is not only a challenge for the county. It is industrywide.

"The county and the commissioners were always committed to technology to serve the taxpayers efficiently."

Last year, Barkey was the 10th highest paid county employee with an annual salary of $51,372.
