Barry Smith has been skiing for 40 years. That experience has paid off locals voted him the best telemark skier in the Best of the 'Boat.
Smith started nordic skiing at age 10. In 1972 he switched over to telemark skiing, and has been doing it ever since. From 1988-1992 Barry was a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America Nordic Demo Team. Smith then became a chief examiner for the PSIA.
He currently teaches Alpine skiing, but when he's not instructing, he telemark skis for fun during his free time. He likes telemark skiing so much he wears his telemark gear while teaching Alpine classes.
Penny Hamilton won the best ski instructor category. She has been an instructor for six years for the Steamboat Springs Ski and Resort Corp., and has been skiing since she was 5.
Penny teaches adult downhill classes, and her specialty is teaching bump skiing. In addition to teaching skiing, Hamilton also teaches strength and conditioning at the Steamboat Springs Health and Recreation Center. And she is an active dancer.
Maybe that's why, in the recreation category, readers voted her the city's best female athlete as well as its best skiing instructor.
