Telluride to help airline guarantees

The Telluride Town Council, voting in special session last week, agree to divert $240,000 from its general fund to help subsidize airline guarantees for the coming ski season.

The money will supplement $1.4 million pledged by 82 local businesses toward a resort airline guarantee budget of $1.8 million.

The money is used to attract direct jet flights into Montrose Regional airport, near Telluride, from Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Newark, N.J. The town council diverted just over half of the appropriated away from a plan to build a parking lot.

Jackson delays ski lift openings

Officials at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort announced its ski season reservations are down 35 percent and it will delay the opening of some ski lifts to save money, even when there is ample snow.

Predicting a no-frills winter, Jackson Hole President jerry Blann sent letters to season pass holders announcing that instead of opening the entire mountain on Dec. 1, lifts would open gradually over a three-week period.

Also, United Express told Jackson Hole officials it would replace its daily Bae-146 jet flight with a smaller Dornier 328 turboprop. Coincidentally, United express recently converted some of its Dornier flights between Steamboat and Denver with the 88-passenger Bae-146.
