Courses teaming up for golf tournament

— Jason Deigert, Haymaker junior golf director, believes an upcoming summer tournament will have a positive impact on the future of youth golf in Steamboat.

On Aug. 7 and 8, the town's four golf courses will team up to put on the first citywide junior golf tournament.

"It's definitely a great event for Routt County juniors," Deigert said. "It's just the first time doing this. I think it will become a tradition."

The two-day tourney will include nine holes of play at each of the courses.

Juniors will play at the Sheraton Steamboat Golf Club and the Steamboat Golf Club Aug. 7, then resume play at the Haymaker Golf Course and Catamount Ranch and Club Aug. 8.

Age divisions, Deigert said, will be 7-9, 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18.

Players in each division totaling the lowest score after 36 holes will be the winners.

Gary Crawford, head pro at the Sheraton Steamboat Golf Club, said the tourney will offer local youths competitive playing experience.

"I think it's just a great opportunity for the juniors to have a chance to not only play all four courses in town, but to play them in a competitive environment," Crawford said.

Anyone ages 7 to 18 can sign up by contacting any of the local junior golf directors.
