TOWN BOARD HIRES NEW POLICE CHIEF

OAK CREEKThe Oak Creek Board of Trustees hired Tom Ling as the town's new police chief.

After interviewing Ling Tuesday night, the board decided to offer him the job Thursday at its public meeting.

Ling is living in Steamboat but will move to South Routt within six months. He will start work Tuesday.

Before a brief stint doing advertising sales for a publishing company in 1998 and 1999, Ling worked as the chief of police for the city of Lake Helen Police Department in Florida from 1980 to 1998. That town has a population of 3,500.

His experience working in law enforcement in Florida dates back to 1970 for the Orange City Police Department, city of Lake Mary Police Department, city of Winter Springs Police Department and the city of Longwood Police Department.

STUDENTS TO LEARN LEADERSHIP SKILLS

OAK CREEKSoroco students will take a class in leadership through a program called Elevens on Wednesday.

Soroco gym teacher and coach Jeff Seal organized the program, which takes high school and middle school students, hand picked as children who are looked up to by their peers, and teaches them leadership skills.

Grand Futures awarded Seal with a $500 grant to pay the majority of costs for the programs, which is run by the Bigger, Faster, Stronger athletics motivation program.
