Tennis tourney for youth continues

— Seven local youth will be in action today and Sunday at the Intermountain Tennis Association's Memorial Weekend 12-and-under Championships.

In the boys division, locals Brian Aragon, Ramsey Bernard and Jesse Speare-Schaller join 29 other competitors fighting to make the finals Sunday.

The tourney, which started Friday, is being held at the Tennis Center here.

Lisa Floyd, Kristin Toy, Molly Weiss and Breanne Murray are playing for Steamboat Springs in the girls division.

They are competing against 20 other youths.

The seven local players are from the Junior Tennis Academy, led by John Aragon.

The tourney features players from six states, including Colorado, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Montana.

Toy, who is 12, said the competition will help strengthen her game.

"It will show me how much I need to improve," she said.

Jim Swiggart, director of the Tennis Center, said the tourney involves a compass draw that guarantees matches every day for all the players.

Starting time both days is at 9 a.m.

In case of bad weather, finals will take place Monday.

There is no fee for those wishing to attend the matches.

Local sponsors are Wells Fargo Bank and the Bunkhouse Lodge.

"It's wonderful to see kids this age play such good tennis and be such good sports," Swiggart said. "It's a real thrill to have as many of our local kids participating."
