Locals vie for top spots

Two Oak Creek women try out for Broncos cheerleading squad

— It was a pretty admirable performance for two women who had very little dance experience going in.

Janet and Laura Vasquez of Oak Creek recently made it to the second round of the Denver Broncos cheerleading tryouts, which earned them a spot in the top 100.

They beat out nearly 200 competitors who didn't make it past the preliminaries.

"I think the people who made it to the top 100 and did not make it to the top 60, it lets them know they do have the talent," said Broncos cheerleaders director Teresa Schroeder. "Technique wise, they did a great job," she said.

Janet and Laura, who are recent graduates of Soroco High School, competed in the tryouts that were held April 8 and 12.

After the first round, only 100 women were left in a field of 280, Schroeder said.

It was then narrowed to 60, before finals took place at the Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center.

Twenty-four women were chosen for the team, along with two alternates, Schroeder said.

Janet, who is 19, said the final 60 women had a great deal of dance experience, while she and her sister, Laura, had very little.

And though she turned out a good performance, Janet isn't considering trying out again next year, she said.

"It was really fun," Janet said.

"It was hard but it was a really good experience. I wouldn't do it again, though. You have to be really dedicated to do it."
