Class gift symbolic of teacher's commitment

— The gift of a tree from Susan Bourn's second-grade class may seem unusual, but it is symbolic of how she has helped children mentally grow and excel over her 22-year career as a teacher in the Steamboat Springs School District. Bourn, who started teaching in Steamboat Springs in 1979, will retire at the end of the school year.

Her willingness to learn and listen has been her biggest asset. John Devincentis, principal of Strawberry Park Elementary, who has worked with Bourn for 17 years, said she always asks a lot of questions. He said that her humble yet knowledgeable approach to education has led to good levels of parent-student involvement. Her outstanding efforts as a teacher resulted in her nomination for Teacher of the Year at Strawberry Park Elementary for the 1994-95 school year.

Devincentis says that although Bourn, 54, may be ready for retirement, she hardly looks her age and is still young. He said she is a fantastic teacher who will be greatly missed.

The presentation of the tree to Bourn is at 2:45 p.m. today and is being done in conjunction with Teacher Appreciation Week as an opportunity for students and staff to express their "thanks" for Bourn's contribution to the school.

A plaque will be placed with the tree that will be planted at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the reading grove at Strawberry Park Elementary.
