'Wave' of ecstacy in area

Three separate arrests allegedly involve the drug

— A concert last weekend netted three separate arrests where two suspects were allegedly caught with the drug ecstasy.

Jonas L. Butterworth, 25, of Steamboat Springs was arrested by a Steamboat Springs officer when he was allegedly caught with ecstasy outside the Sheraton Hotel.

Two other suspects, Kelli Lynn Hobson and Matthew Raymond Schroeder, were arrested early Sunday morning in the hotel by undercover agents from the Grant, Routt and Moffat counties Narcotics Enforcement Team.

Hobson, 25, of Steamboat Springs, was arrested just after midnight when she was allegedly seen taking an ecstasy pill and giving a pill to a woman.

Schroeder, 25, of Denver was arrested at about 12:30 a.m. after he was allegedly caught with mushrooms and cocaine.

Deputy District Attorney Charles Feldmann, who is prosecuting Butterworth and Hobson, said he is not surprised ecstasy has surfaced in Routt County.

With the drug becoming a focus of law enforcement agencies on the Front Range, GRAMNET is also making the drug a priority, said Feldmann, who is a project manager for the task force.

"Recently, we have learned of rave parties occurring, which is where this drug is commonly used, in Routt and Grand counties," Feldmann said.

It has been "several years" since Routt County has caught a person with ecstasy, he said.

"We are starting to see the new wave of it here," he said.

Butterworth is being held in the Routt County Jail on a $10,000 bond. He has been charged with possession of a schedule I controlled substance, a class three felony. Butterworth is expected to appear in court at 1 p.m. Tuesday for a bond reduction hearing. According to a court file, Butterworth was arrested as he and two other men were standing outside in a parking structure in the 2300 block of Mount Werner Circle. The officer approached the three men when he detected an odor of marijuana.

The officer searched the men and allegedly found a canister filled with ecstasy pills in Butterworth's clothing, the file shows. Hobson posted a $20,000 bond Sunday.

She faces charges of possession and distribution of a controlled I substance, possession of a controlled II substance and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. According to a court file, authorities allegedly found an ecstasy pill, a small amount of marijuana, a marijuana pipe and a hydrocodone pill, which is a narcotic pain reliever, in Hobson's backpack.

Police arrested the woman after an agent allegedly saw her slip an ecstasy pill to an unidentified woman and then take a pill herself, the file states.
