Steamboat Springs Liz Masterson and Andryn Arithson combined for four goals and two assists against Glenwood Springs Tuesday to help lead the Steamboat Sailors girls soccer team to its first league victory of the year.
The Sailors scored four second-half goals as they went on to pitch a 6-0 shutout in their first league game, which was in Glenwood. The team improved to 3-1-1.
"They hung with us really well," Sailors coach Jim Dudley said. "It was 2-0 at halftime. Their keeper played very well and we didn't finish some we needed to finish."
Masterson opened up the scoring on an assist from Andrea Len.
Julie Wernig knocked in the second goal on a double assist from Masterson and Len.
In the second half, Masterson scored an unassisted goal that gave the Sailors a 3-0 lead.
Arithson went on to score twice and Jessica Johnson drove in a goal to close out the scoring.
Jill Wernig, Julie Wernig, Nikki Garth and Arithson all had second-half assists.
Kelly Asbury, Sailors goalkeeper, left the game early with a sprained ankle, Dudley said. Jannike Combs filled in for Asbury to help preserve the shutout.
Dudley said the play of Jill Wernig and Len up front was a key to Tuesday's victory.
The Sailors next face the Moffat County Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Thursday in Craig.
"I think they're the best team we got coming up," Dudley said. "Every team we play is the best one coming up. We'll go into it with that attitude."
