— The Routt County Planning Commission will discuss the existing special use permit of the Hogue Gravel Pit, owned by Duckels Construction Inc., in a public meeting tonight.

In a letter sent to Duckels Construction by Routt County, staff planner Jim Goossens states that the plan that officials from the mine showed to the planning department in a Feb. 26 meeting is not the same plan that was approved by the Planning Commission in 1992 and reviewed in 1997.

"This explains why the visual mitigation is not taking place along the northwest border of the pit," Goossens states in the letter.

According to the special use permit, Duckels Construction is committed to building berms to shield the visual impact of the mine, located south of Steamboat Spring.

Duckels Construction was asked to present a timeline showing when those measures will be met. The company also will be asked to discuss other conditions of the permit that need to be met, according to the county.
