Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs U-15 girls hockey team placed third at the Mountain States League championships March 2-4 in Breckenridge.
The team posted a 2-2 record in the tournament by beating teams from the University of Denver and Summit County. Unfortunately, the local girls failed to score a goal against the two powerhouse teams in the tourney. Steamboat lost a 7-0 contest with Aspen and a 5-0 game with Vail. Aspen won the state title by topping Vail in the championship contest.
In the first game of the tournament, however, the local team came away with a thrilling 1-1 (3-1) overtime shootout win over Denver University.
Denver led by a single goal for most of the game, but in the third period, Whitney Koch's score tied the game at 1 goal apiece. Tara King and Sisi Atkinson provided the assist.
The two teams played through overtime, but a five-player shootout would be needed to determine the outcome. Steamboat's Katie Mills gave up just one goal to the Denver team. She got some help from Atkinson, Lena Fancher and Kelly Smith, who all managed to slip the puck past the Denver goalkeeper.
In the second game of the tournament, the Steamboat team ran into a tough team from Aspen. The local girls were unable to score in the disappointing 7-0 loss.
But Steamboat rebounded in the third game of the weekend as Colleen King scored twice in the first period. Assists on King's first goal came from Morgan Dingle and Carly Helm. Fancher and Erin Bomberg helped out with the second score. Summit made a run with a third-period goal, but Mills was hard to beat, stopping 24 of Summit's 25 shots on goal.
In the Steamboat team's final game of the weekend, Vail handed the girls a 5-0 loss. Steamboat, however, had already secured third place in the final tournament standings.
