Snow delays track team's first meet
Friday, March 9, 2001
Steamboat Springs A snow-covered track in Meeker has left the Steamboat Sailors track team with two more weeks to prepare before their first meet of the year.
The Sailors, who were scheduled to take part in the Meeker Relays today, will now open their season at the Delta Invitational March 24.
Sloppy weather conditions forced Meeker school officials to cancel the relays.
Steamboat, which has 47 members on the 2000-2001 team, is led by Andy Reust, who took over the head coaching job Monday.
Mike Hill, who was the Sailors' coach last season, stepped down from the head-coaching position last week but says he wants to continue as a volunteer coach.
Laura Bruns, Sailors assistant coach, said the cancellation would benefit her team by allowing the athletes more time to train before they begin competition.
The regional track meets are scheduled for May 11 and 12 in Grand Junction. The state meet will be held May 18 and 19 at Jeffco Stadium.
