Tournament, auction and barn dance all part of Ski Town Golf Classic

— The largest golf tournament in Steamboat Springs will tee off at the Sheraton Steamboat and Haymaker golf courses Aug. 17 and 18.

The Ski Town USA Golf Classic, which rakes in about $100,000 annually, will feature a two-day golf tournament and a benefit auction at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort.

"We expect about 200 players," said Bonnie Boylan of the Yampa Valley Medical Center development office.

"This is the fourth year we're doing it, so we are starting to get a reputation," Boylan said. "It's the biggest one in Steamboat right now."

Money raised from the Golf Classic will benefit the cancer-treatment services of Yampa Valley Medical Center, youth and senior projects at the Steamboat Springs Rotary and the Doak Walker Memorial Endowment Fund.

The Walker Fund awards high school scholarships in Northwest Colorado.

Walker, who lived in Steamboat for 30 years, died in 1998 following complications that stemmed from a skiing accident in Steamboat.

He played professional football for the Detroit Lions, helping Detroit win NFL championships in 1952 and 1953.

The Doak Walker Award, which goes to the top college running back every season, is named for him.

Boylan said hundreds of items will be donated to the auction by local and national merchants and businesses.

Some of the items that will be auctioned off are a salmon fishing trip to Alaska, a vacation package to the 2002 Super Bowl in New Orleans and a Caribbean cruise on a luxury yacht.

Last year, the Alaskan salmon trip went for $17,000, said Mignon Huizenga, event co-chair.

In addition to the Aug. 17 auction, a western barbecue and barn dance will be held at the Sheraton Aug. 18.

Non-golfers can attend the Friday and Saturday evening events for $30. Tickets are available at Chez Nous, Kali's Boutique and from Rotary members.

The entry fee for the golf tournament is $450 per person, which includes two days of golf, breakfast and lunch daily and admittance into the evening events.

Food will be served at the auction where a Skyy Vodka martini bar also will be set up, Huizenga said.

The Golf Classic is one of the most popular sporting events in Steamboat, Huizenga said.

"It's evolved into, I think, one of the biggest events of the summer, and the reason being is we have a lot of unique items to auction off."
