Hakan Stig Lindgren of Steamboat Springs died July 5, 2001. He was 50.
Hakan was born Nov. 17, 1950 in Vingaker, Sweden to Marget (Berggren) Lindgren of Kungsor, Sweden and the late Evald Lindgren. He married Birgitta Wiik Aug. 9, 1987 in Hayden.Hakan was raised in Sweden and completed his training in the Swedish military. He served as a jet engine technician for the military after his training.
Sports were always his passion. He was an avid hockey player and nordic skier. He was very dedicated to his local Swedish sports club, coaching and training young athletes. He always loved traveling and took advantage of the opportunity when he could.
He had a long list of accomplishments. He was member a member of the Swedish National Cross Country Ski Team from 1972-1977; he competed in the Worldloppet Marathon Series 1978-1996 in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the United States; he was a certified Level 1-2-3 coach for the Swedish National Ski Federation. He was a former coach of the Swedish Junior Cross Country Ski Teams, the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club cross country ski team and the U.S. Nordic Combined team in Park City, Utah. He was an official at many national and international cross country ski competitions including the 1989 World Cup cross country in Park City, the nordic combined World Cup in Steamboat Springs from 1995-1998, and he was to be the chief of course for the nordic combined in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
He is survived by his wife, Birgitta and daughter Kajsa of Steamboat Springs; his mother, Marget, of Kungsor, Sweden; a daughter, Ulrika Lindgren-Emet and her husband, Hans, of Koping, Sweden; a grandson, Robin; a twin brother, Goran Lindgren, of Arboga, Sweden; and a brother, Jan Haldin of Kil, Sweden.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A memorial service was held July 20, 2001 at the Scandinavian Lodge in Steamboat Springs with Rob Ryg officiating. He was cremated. Peterson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
