Nordic skiers get ready for Vail meet

— Sailors cross-country skier Jessica Philip breezed through the Snow Mountain course in Granby Saturday, placing second overall at a Classic event.

Philip, who ended the race in 22:27.7, was second only to Summit's Erin Sain.

Sain finished in 22:12.2 to capture first place.

Steamboat's womens team placed ninth at the event.

The mens team, which was led by Austin Ross, finished in a fourth-place tie with Clear Creek High School.

Ross clocked in at 20:17.9 to finish eighth overall and first on the team.

Tyler Percy and JoJo Bucci also scored points for the Sailors.

Ross, who is a freshman, was proud that his team came away with a top-five finish, he said. The Sailors have only three members on the men's team.

Philip is the lone women's Nordic skier.

In first place in the men's race was Summit skier Will Gervais who finished in 18:25.1. Gervais was followed by Willson Gaul of Battle Mountain who completed the race in 18:47.8.

"I thought it was a good course," Ross said. "They had a lot of double polling at the start and finish. It was a pretty good race.

"The starting intervals were 30 seconds. Everybody was pretty far apart so you couldn't pace yourself with anybody."

The Sailors Nordic team next competes at 10 a.m. Feb. 2 at Vail Golf Course.
