— Steamboat Springs' High School alpine team recently completed a busy week of racing, after competing in two events during a five-day span at Winter Park and Summit.

The Sailors mens team, which placed second at a slalom event in Winter Park Friday, went on to place No. 1 at a giant slalom event in Summit Tuesday.

Individual times and team scores for Summit were not immediately available, though Stewart Beall, Andrew Porter-Merrill and Joe Liefer all made the top 5. Cassidy Kurtz was No. 2 at Summit.

At Winter Park, the Sailors' womens alpine team came in third, while Kurtz finished No. 1 individually.

Vail Mountain School claimed the top spot over the Steamboat Springs men at Winter Park, despite the Sailors receiving a strong performance by Beall.

Beall skied to a first-place finish to lead the men to a No. 2 spot, by posting a combined time of 1:24.66.

He blew by Stefan Lauterbach of Battle Mountain, who had a combined time of 1:27.14.

"That's pretty much a crush," said Sailors alpine ski coach Chris Arnis.

Chris Dombey and Gunnar Sorensen came in 11th and 13th places respectively for the Sailors, though Sorensen's time did not garner the Sailors points because he was not seeded in the top six.

In order for a skier to score points for his team, he has to be seeded in the top six. The three skiers who post the fastest times out of those six individuals are the team's point scorers.

Sorensen's time may have lifted the Sailors to the top spot if he had been seeded higher.

Beall, Dombey and JoJo Bucci scored points for the Sailors at Winter Park.

Bucci, who placed in the top 20, also competed in a Nordic Classic event at Granby Saturday.

"He's a team player," Arnis said. "If there's anyone I'm going to nominate for the skier-of-the-year-award, it's Bucci."

In the womens alpine race at Winter Park, Kurtz edged by Aspen's Kate Jensen by finishing in a combined time of 1:24.50. Jensen came in at 1:24.53. Ashley Carruth of Alexander Dawson High School came in third place, with a total time of 1:26.96.

Other skiers who scored points for the Sailors at Winter Park were Camilla Chase and Rebecca Herman.

The Sailors now enjoy a week off before competing in a giant slalom at Vail-Gold Peak Feb. 3. Racing begins at 9:30 a.m.
