Cowboys hustle past Tigers

— Out of four quarters of play, Matt Ray believes his Hayden boys team showed up for one.

Hayden dropped a Western Slope League game against Plateau Valley Tuesday night 83-45.

"We only played for one quarter," Ray said. "It all comes down to hustle and hard work.

"I'm without words. We just did not come out and play."

The Tigers fell behind early on in the game. After the first quarter, the Tigers trailed 17-8.

The Tigers committed seven turnovers in the first quarter alone.

"There was no concentration," Ray said. "They tried to force everything."

The Tigers clawed their way back into the contest in the second quarter.

Behind the strong play of senior point guard Matt Walden, the Tigers cut into the lead and trailed the Cowboys 35-25 at halftime.

"In the second quarter, we worked hard," Ray said. "But then we came out in the second half and couldn't do it."

The game was put out of reach by the Cowboys when they went on a 13-0 run midway through the third quarter. The Tigers scored only eight points in the period and trailed 62-33.

The Cowboys continued to build their lead until the final horn sounded.

The Tigers were led in scoring by Walden, who had 19 points. The next leading scorer was junior Chris Gullet, who had seven.

The Cowboys were led by a trio of seniors. Mark Azcarraga had 16 points, Cole Click had 15 and Luke Lopez added 14.

The Tigers are now 2-6 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Cowboys are 6-3 and 2-0 in league play.
