Chix hope to bounce back

Women's hockey team hopes for wins on road

— The Chix with Stix women's hockey team will try to shake off the effects of a disappointing 3-2 loss to Vail when it hits the road for three games this weekend.

Steamboat is scheduled to face the Bandits on Friday, the Rockets on Saturday and the Northern Colorado Comets on Sunday.

Down by two goals to Vail headed into the final period Saturday, the local women's team made a valiant run that fell just short of its mark. Sheila Cahur's goal with less than five minutes remaining pulled Steamboat to within one goal. But the hometown women were unable to come up with the score needed to tie the game in the final stretch.

Vail scored in all three periods.

Steamboat got a second-period goal from Val Dietrich assisted by Sue Heineke. Liz Schnackenberg assisted the Cahur goal in the final period.

The Chix returned to the ice on Sunday and beat the Steamboat Storm in a 10-0 contest. Dietrich had two goals and two assists. Diane Dwire, Kit Rice and Schnackenberg all added two goals. Lee Cox and Julia Wallace both scored once.

The Chix also won a game on Feb. 17 against Salt Lake City behind two goals from Schnackenberg. Dwire was credited with the assist on the final goal.

Chix goalie Carol Vittore stopped 20 shots to record the shutout. The Chix' backup goalkeeper, Angie Hess, played for the Salt Lake City team and stopped 42 out of 44 shots. Several Chix players and a few from the Steamboat Storm stepped in to help out the shorthanded Salt Lake City squad.

On Feb. 18 the Chix lost a tough game against Breckenridge. The visiting team won the game 2-1. Breckenridge scored once in the first period and then again in the second.

The Chix answered when Dwire netted a goal with less than a minute to play in the second period.

But that goal would end the scoring in the game and the Steamboat team fell one goal short in its rally.

Steamboat was scheduled to face off against Vail late Monday night. Watch this week's Today for a game recap.
