— Steamboat Springs was able to shoot the lights out early on against Montrose at the district semifinals Friday night, which helped jump-start a 56-34 victory at Mesa State College in Grand Junction.

The Sailors, who are headed to the regional tourney March 2-3, square off against the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers for the district title at 7:45 p.m. tonight at Mesa State College.

Steamboat opened up its first considerable lead of the game when Hunter Maddox knocked down a 3-pointer that put the team on top 11-2 late in the first quarter.

Alex Mackey's basket in the final seconds of the first half gave Steamboat a commanding 34-9 lead at the break.

Montrose made two 3-pointers to start the fourth quarter that narrowed the margin to 46-23, but after a timeout called by Steamboat, the Sailors came out with renewed energy.

After a jumper by Andrew Johnston, Jeff Aragon bagged two straight 3-pointers that put the Sailors on top 54-23 with a little more than five minutes remaining. The Sailors were outscored 11-2 from that point on, though most of their starters had already made their way to the bench.
