Steamboat Springs Ryan Kiely scored 11 points and Andrew Johnston added eight more as the Steamboat Sailors downed the Battle Mountain Huskies 39-28 in a district playoff game Thursday night at Mesa State College.
It was a low-scoring affair, but in the end, the Sailors earned themselves a spot in the regional playoffs that take place March 2-3, with a time and location yet to be announced.
The Sailors have two games yet to play in the district tournament.
Steamboat's first-round district playoff win over Battle Mountain marks the third time this year the Huskies have fallen to the Sailors.
Steamboat, which improved to 18-2 on the season, led at the end of all four quarters and held a 15-11 halftime advantage.
Battle Mountain was held to just two points in the third quarter.
Kiely connected on a pair of 3-pointers and Jeff Aragon scored seven points for Steamboat.
As a team, the Sailors were 11 of 15 from the free-throw line. Battle Mountain made three of five attempts from the line.
Josh Henry led the way for the Huskies with 11 points.
Steamboat now faces Montrose, which pulled off a big upset over Glenwood Springs in the first round of districts Thursday. Montrose, which improved to 2-18 on the season, won 60-57.
Steamboat plays Montrose at 8:15 p.m. tonight at Mesa State College. The Sailors also play Saturday, though an opponent will not be determined until after tonight's outcome.
