Steamboat Springs Steamboat Today was honored as the best newspaper of its size in Colorado at two separate awards ceremonies over the weekend.
On Friday, the Today received the Joe McGowan award for general excellence. The award is given by the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters organization to the top daily newspaper in each of three circulation classes. Steamboat Today won the small newspaper category.
"The thing I'm most proud of is that the judges were impressed by the strong local content in the newspaper," said Editor Mark Louden. "We know we're not perfect and we're always striving to improve, but one thing we pride ourselves on is serving our readers with a great local news and sports package great in terms of both quantity and quality."
The Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald won the AP award for medium markets and The Denver Post was picked as the top large newspaper in the state.
On Saturday, Steamboat Today again was honored with a general excellence award from the Colorado Press Association. The award recognizes top overall performance by a newspaper in three categories: advertising, editorial content, and photo and design.
Newspapers also are recognized for their performance in each of those categories with what are called "sweepstakes" awards.
Steamboat Today won the advertising, and photo and design sweepstakes awards. The Steamboat Pilot won the advertising sweepstakes award for its weekly circulation division. Together the newspapers won an award for their joint Web site.
