Tiger grapplers wrestle at state

Sights set on finishing in top five


— The Hayden Tigers will enter the Denver Pepsi Center Thursday with their sights set on finishing in the top-five at the state wrestling championships that run through Saturday.

The Tigers, who won the 2A regional championship in Grand Junction Feb. 10, qualified 10 wrestlers for the state tourney. Soroco, which also competed at the Grand Junction 2A regionals, has five wrestlers that will compete in Denver.

Anton Fredrickson, who wrestles in the 135-pound class, enters the 2001 tournament as the defending state champion.

Fredrickson, who has 30 wins against four losses, comes off a second-place finish at the regional tournament.

Joining him at the Pepsi Center will be teammates Troy Kochenower (112), Jimmy Rossi (125), Josh Geissinger (140), Kelly Bruchez (145), Kevin Miller (152), Riley Whiteman (160), Joel Wixson (171), Clayton Neumiller (189) and Tanner Copeland (215).

The Rams will be represented by Josh Iacovetto (103), Brandon Ager (119), Cody Denning (130), Brandon Gilleland (152) and Tyler Knott (160).

The preliminaries for the 2A/3A classes are from 3-6:15 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, 2A/3A wrestling resumes at 10 a.m. with the championship quarterfinals, followed by the first round of consolations.

The 4A/5A preliminaries are from 7:15-10:45 p.m. Thursday. The championship quarterfinals for the 4A/5A classes start at 1 p.m. Friday, followed by the first round of consolations.

State wrestling will continue through Saturday.
