Nite's Rest upset by Alpine Oral and Facial
Monday, February 12, 2001
Steamboat Springs It wasn't the type of game that you would expect when the top team in the league takes on the bottom team.
But on Sunday, Alpine Oral and Facial Surgery won its first game of the season by toppling the No. 1 team Nite's Rest/Winona's in a 4-3 thriller at Howelsen Ice Arena.
Alpine is still in the cellar, however, with a 1-9-1 record. The loss was more critical to Nite's Rest who dropped back into a tie for second place with a 7-3-1 record.
Alpine took an early lead behind a Chris Timmerman score and never really surrendered it.
The game was tied at 1-1 in the first period after David Schaller scored for Nite's Rest, but a pair of goals from Gunnar Ludwig gave Alpine a 4-2. Lars Calistro netted a goal for Alpine.
Paul Williams scored twice in the game for Nite's Rest including a goal in the final five minutes of the game that made things interesting.
Alpine's goalkeeper Donn Fowler turned away several Nite's Rest scoring attempts in the final minutes to give his team its first win of the season.
In the other game on Sunday, Precision Pools and Spas moved into a tie for first place by beating Backdoor Sports/The Skate Zone in a 4-1 contest.
Glen Martin led the charge for the Precision team by netting two goals and an assist in the contest.
The teams in the senior league will play the final regular season games of the year Sunday at Howelsen.
The games will have a huge impact on the post-season playoff pairings.
