Children's museum hosts night of fun

Steamboat Springs Parents and children get the opportunity to escape each other for a few hours Wednesday night when the Steamboat Springs National Honor Society and Hands-On! Children's Museum host a night of fun.
As a beneficiary for the museum, the Honor Society created the notion for children of an evening of pizza, arts and crafts and free rein over the museum and all its channels of creativity.
For one child, the registration fee is $30, but the more kids in the family, the better. Rates decrease with every child added.
Children can be dropped off anytime after 6 p.m.
After a pizza dinner, children will create cut-and-paste Valentine art and get to explore the various paths that lead to special rooms in the museum.
Because the fund-raiser occurs after museum hours, only the children who signed up will have the chance to use the multi-faceted museum with theme rooms ranging from the "Outer space" room to "Life on the Ranch" room.
Jennie Fuhrer, program coordinator, said the Honor Society should be given credit for all the work; the museum only provided the foundation.
"Some students volunteered for us in November and December when we were first getting started," Fuhrer said of the 17 student volunteers expected Wednesday.
The museum opened in mid-December and Fuhrer said she tapped out her resources for local volunteers.
That's when she found Andryn Arithson.
Fuhrer said Arithson, an Honor Society member, helped out with the start of the new museum and thought of this idea as a way to benefit the museum.
"It amazes me to see kids so super at that age," Fuhrer said of Arithson.
"Parents need to take a break and escape for a while. This way, everyone wins," Fuhrer said.
For registration for Wednesday night's fund-raiser, call 871-9955. For those worried mothers, a nurse will attend the event, just in case.
