Steamboat Springs A young boy suffered minor injuries after taking a tumble witnessed by dozens of spectators of Sunday's Winter Carnival street events.
"It was a pretty nasty fall," Sandy Evans Hall, executive vice president for the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, said Monday.
"He was complaining about some pain in his back, so we called the ambulance as a precaution."
The 11-year-old boy, whose name was not released, fell during the Donkey Jump, an event in which a skier pulled down the street by a galloping horse soars off a small jump in the middle of snow-covered Lincoln Avenue.
The boy, who was wearing a required helmet, crashed while attempting to land his jump. He was taken by ambulance to Yampa Valley Medical Center, where he was treated and released that day.
Hospital spokeswoman Christine McKelvie said the boy suffered minor facial injuries and a slight concussion.
He is expected to make a full recovery.
Winter Carnival volunteer Scott Flower said the boy apparently misjudged the speed he needed to complete the jump and ended up doing a cartwheel down Lincoln Avenue.
Ski patrolman Frank Dolman was on the scene immediately. He was joined by Routt County Search and Rescue volunteers who were waiting to participate in the Winter Carnival parade.
"We did not have an ambulance there, but they arrived very quickly once we called them," Evans Hall said.
