Bonfils hoping for hearty turnout at drive

— Community-minded people in Steamboat Springs will be giving an early Valentine's gift today one that's close to their heart.

The Bonfils Blood Center will hold a blood drive from 12:30 to 6 p.m. at Steamboat Springs Airport.

"Have a heart give blood the day before Valentine's Day," Steamboat blood drive organizer Terry Sherrill said. "Bring a friend or family member and double the donation."

Walk-in donors are welcome.

Bonfils collects blood for medical centers all over Colorado. The demand for blood means Bonfils must collect nearly 2,600 units of blood every week.

The last local blood drive on Dec. 19, 2000, collected a record 211 units of blood.

Bonfils recruitment specialist Rosa Gonzalez expressed amazement that of the December donors, 27 were first-time blood donors.

"We hope those individuals will become regular donors that we may add to our donor base," Gonzalez wrote in a letter to Sherrill.
