— Five people were injured, one seriously, after two cars collided head-on Sunday morning on U.S. 40 between Milner and Hayden.

At about 9:20 a.m., Christopher Brozovich, 17, of Mesa, Ariz., was driving from Hayden to Steamboat Springs to church in a 1998 Chevy Malibu with his 15-year-old sister, Candra, in the passenger seat. His car veered into the westbound lane and struck a 2002 Buick Century going the other direction, Colorado State Trooper Brad Keadle said.

Judith Burns, 45, was driving the Buick from Steamboat Springs to Yampa Valley Regional Airport with her daughter, Whitney Burns, 15, and friend Shannon McKay, 17. All three are from Okemos, Mich.

"All five parties were transported to the Yampa Valley Medical Center," Keadle said.

McKay was injured most severely, suffering a broken neck, collapsed lung and lacerated liver, Keadle said. She is in critical condition and has been admitted into the intensive care unit of the medical center, Yampa Valley Medical Center CEO Karl Gill said.

Christopher Brozovich fractured his ankle and a rib and dislocated his hip and is listed in serious condition after undergoing surgery. Candra Brozovich is in fair condition after surgery related to facial lacerations. Judith Burns is in fair condition after surgery for a fractured ankle, and her daughter is in fair condition with a sprained knee and hip, Keadle and Gill said.

Christopher Brozovich received a citation for careless driving causing serious injury. Keadle said Brozovich was not paying attention, which is what caused the accident.

All of the victims were wearing their seatbelts.

The Routt County Sheriff's Office, West Routt Fire and Rescue and the Colorado Department of Transportation assisted on the call.

The accident caused U.S. 40 to be closed between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m.
