Steamboat Springs Many people think New Year's Eve is overrated. But the eve of a new year should bring excitement and an excuse to celebrate all of the good memories now filed in your mind.
You may reflect on the year and think of a hundred million different things that went wrong. Certainly on a national scale, this was a year that will be remembered most for the horrific tragedy on Sept. 11.
But whatever the hardships, don't forget it's another year we lived and another year we've all become older and wiser.
For one night, let's forget the mayhem in the world and think good thoughts for 2002 the first babies born at midnight Jan. 1, new explorations of the world or the ambitious athletes competing in the upcoming Olympics.
As years have passed in my life, I have begun to realize it's not always where you are, but whom you are with that matters.
Have you pondered your plans for an unforgettable entrance into 2002? Obviously Colorado's larger cities will have big bashes for one of the most memorable nights of the year; however, there's plenty to do in Steamboat to enjoy New Year's Eve.
Whether it's dinner at Hazie's looking out on fireworks over the Yampa Valley, blowing kazoos at a friend's house party, dancing to a live band at a local bar or lying in bed, I encourage you to celebrate with a New Year's kiss. It gets the year started with comfort and excitement and can be the perfect thing to complete the night.
So, as you stand arm in arm with the person next to you swaying back and forth to "Auld Lang Syne," reach over and plant one on someone.
In "When Harry Met Sally," Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan finally realize their true feelings for one another on New Year's Eve. As "Auld Lang Syne" plays in the background, Harry contemplates what the song means.
"Does it mean we should forget all the acquaintances and if so, does it mean if we happen to forget them that we should remember them, which is not possible because we already forgot them," Harry said.
"Maybe it's that we should remember that we forgot them," Sally replies. "Anyway, it's about old friends."
Indeed it is.
Here's hoping you find an old friend with whom to share New Year's Eve.
