Steamboat Springs After a busy December run, two local women's hockey teams will have to wait until January for the next game.
The Chix with Stix women's "A" team finished up the month with a series of games against the Denver Bandits.
The Chix played to a 1-1 tie with the Bandits Dec. 8 and also tied the Denver team in a 2-2 game Dec. 9
In the first game, the Chix's only goal came in the second period when Val Dietrich pushed the puck into the net with an assist from Jen Rose. The Bandits tied the game later in the period to complete the scoring.
Chix goalkeeper Carol Vittore stopped 14 of the 15 Bandit shots in the game. The Chix unleashed 32 shots on goal.
In the second game, the Chix got second-period goals from Heidi Chapman and Dietrich. Assists came from Cathy Wiedemer and Shelia Henderson. The Bandits scored once in the first period and then again in the third to tie the score.
The Chix will be off until Jan. 5, when they are scheduled to play a set of games with the Rocky Mountain Rockets. The first game will take place at 9 p.m. and the second will be played Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. The local team is currently 2-2-2 for the season.
Steamboat's other women's hockey team, the Storm, will also have to wait until January to get back on the ice.
The Storm hosted the Fort Collins Comets "B" team Dec. 15 and played to a 1-1 tie.
In the low-scoring contest, the Storm struck with less than a minute left in the first period.
Lisa Owen netted the goal after a shot from Diane Anderson rebounded in front of the net. But in the third, the Comets tied the score with less than five minutes left to play.
Storm goalkeeper Angie Hess played a near flawless game by stopping 22 of 23 shots.
Things didn't run as smoothly for the Storm Sunday as they fell to the Comets in a 4-2 contest.
Anderson scored the first goal of the game in the first period, but the Comets countered with four unanswered goals. Steamboat's Susie Leeson scored with one minute left to play in the game on an unassisted effort. Leeson finished the game with one goal and one assist.
The Storm will be off until Jan. 12, when they host the Breckenridge Snowcats at Howelsen. The Storm is currently 1-3-2 in the Women's Association of Colorado Hockey.
The Storm also played a pair of games in Breckenridge Dec. 8 and 9. The Storm lost to the Breckenridge "A" team in a 5-0 game and tied the "B" squad in a 2-2 contest.
Steamboat's Owen and Kelly Halpin both scored in the contest. Assists came from patty Chovan, Mary Whelihan and Deb Rose.
