Steamboat Springs Local tennis player Alexanda Leatu has been returning volleys since she was 3 years old.
On Nov. 24 and 25, Leatu won three straight matches en route to winning the title at the Turkey Shoot Invitational Tennis Tournament in Colorado Springs.
"I travel to a lot of different tournaments all over the place," Leatu said. "This was a nice one to win."
The 9-year-old Leatu won all three matches over the weekend, including a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jessica Lawrence in the finals of 10-and-under divisions.
It was the first time she has won a tournament title and was awarded a trophy for her efforts.
Leatu is a member of the Steamboat Springs Junior Tennis Academy and is coached by John Aragon.
"This was a big win for her," Aragon said of the win. "This tournament draws a lot of top players."
The Junior Academy is offered every month at the Tennis Center. Players are divided into groups based on age and playing level.
The academy normally instructs between 30 and 50 students and meets Mondays and Wednesdays. Players can join the club at any time but will receive a discounted rate if they start at the beginning of the month.
Several of the academy's students have gone on to complete and place well at regional competitions. For more information on the academy, call the Tennis Center at 879-8400.
