Steamboat Springs To raise money for cancer-treatment programs at Yampa Valley Medical Center, the Dream Team has sponsored its fourth annual shotgun golf tournament and live and silent auction.
The Dream Team is a group of women volunteers who help raise money for the hospital.
The weekend begins with a golf registration party from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Steamboat Grand Resort.
The following morning, golfers will line up at their tees at 8 a.m. for a shotgun foursome golf tournament at the Haymaker and Sheraton golf courses.
For golfers and the nongolfers of the bunch, a live and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Sheraton Grand Ballroom will directly benefit the medical center's cancer-treatment programs.
"What makes this so unique is the amount and kind of auction items offered," said Mignon Huizenga, coordinator of the event.
Huizenga said about 25 items will be available for the live auction, and hundreds of items will be available as silent auction items.
"It takes about one year to really work this and get these high-end items," Huizenga said. "You can get anything you want."
Auction items include sky box seats to an Avalanche game or to see the Backstreet Boys, a week on a 122-foot yacht, a trip to Alaska, as well as baskets full of goodies and many other items.
Each year the hospital board decides on a different department where money needs to be raised.
Huizenga said she expects to raise $100,000 this year. In 1998, the first year of the large annual fund-raiser, the hospital raised $17,000. Last year, it raised $88,000.
If people cannot attend the event but would like to donate money, the hospital is taking reserve bids on certain auction items.
Tickets for the live and silent auction are $30, which includes beer, wine and food. Tickets are available at Chez Nous, Kali's Boutique, Olivia's Home Furnishings and at the door.
