Cavers unaware of 4.0 earthquake
GLENWOOD SPRINGS Glenwood Springs was hit by an earthquake registering 4.0 on the Richter scale Aug. 9 while cavers in the Glenwood Caverns didn't even have a clue.
The epicenter was on the White River Uplift, a geological feature about five miles north of Glenwood Springs.
At the time of the earthquake, 40 tourists were on the Glenwood Caverns public paths and six people were crawling in the more remote areas of caverns. However, the people in the cave reported that they didn't feel a thing, according to a news release.
Conventional wisdom of cavers is that a cave is a safe place to be during an earthquake, Glenwood Caverns owner Steve Beckly said.
He stated the Aug. 9 earthquakes proves that wisdom.
DOW offices may still have licenses
People who weren't successful in the limited license draw for the big-game hunting seasons in Colorado still can get a tag.
Some units have leftover draw tags for elk, deer, bear and antelope. They can be purchased starting Tuesday at a Colorado Division of Wildlife office at a first-come, first-served basis. The office also has a list of tags available, or check out the DOW Web site at wildlife.state.co.us.
Yellowstone east entrance to reopen
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK (AP) Officials expected to open Yellowstone's east entrance 24 hours a day beginning Monday, as favorable weather allowed firefighters to fully contain a 2-week-old wildfire Saturday.
The lightning-caused fire began July 29 about one mile east of Sylvan Pass. The same day, the east gate closed because of danger to motorists from the fire and heavy equipment on and near the highway.
