Exercise can change perceptions

If you want people to know that you're confident, in control and a hard worker, let them know you exercise. According to the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, a recent study at McMasters University showed exercisers were more likely to be seen by others as healthy and sexually attractive. Nice, huh?

BEHIND THE HEADLINES

Can Steamboat keep the Crown?

Some locals grumble about the traffic that sometimes stalls to a stand-still, about their favorite restaurants packed to the rafters and the general claustrophbia of having Steamboat Springs' population triple for weeks at a time. Those same people, however, may not be grumbling so loud on payday. The Triple Crown, which brings in baseball to Steamboat from practically everywhere else, has its benefits and detriments but cannot be taken for granted. Dave King, president of Triple Crown, explains.

AFTER THE WHISTLE

Don't tarnish the memories

For as long as I can remember, I've been a Broncos fan. I remember watching Tom Jackson, Steve Foley, Billy Thompson, Lyle Alzado and the intimidating Orange Crush defense long before I could drive a car. I even remember watching Craig Morton and Denver's struggling offense when they were pummeled by the Dallas Cowboys in their first Super Bowl appearance.

Despite the fact that I think the Routt Divide Blowdown is an awesome spectacle of nature that everyone should see, I hope the Mad Creek fire burns as many patches of the downed trees as it possibly can before there are dry, standing beetle kill trees all over the forest.

Students see more hours per mile

Law requires learners to have more experience before getting a license

Last weekend Rebecca Herman was driving home from Denver, heading for the Steamboat Springs post office on the corner of Third Street and Lincoln Avenue. It was a routine drive for the permit-holding 15-year-old. Her mother was in the passenger seat. Herman has been told she needs to take her turns a bit more carefully, but she didn't spend too much time pondering those reminders. When she turned the corner, instead of braking or slowing down, Herman continued to accelerate and came within an inch from hitting a Jeep Cherokee.

Horse competitors from the region hoof it to Hayden

Compared to Saturday's Routt County Fair horse show events of working a cow and reining, or today's trail classes and barrel racing, the showmanship events could be a yawner for spectators. But for the the participants in four classes from 11 years old and under to the open class, it looks tedious. Participants stand with their horses in the arena with all the competitors in the event and wait for judge Terry Wegener, who is standing about 50 feet away, to give them the nod.

OUR VIEW

Celebrating us

ASKED AND ANSWERED

That favorite wooden chair or table you have doesn't need to go in the dumpster just because it has a crack, a dent or a broken leg. We've all experienced a good piece of furniture that has experienced damage. But don't fret it can be repaired.
