Steamboat Springs Some of Yampa Valley's most integral non-profit groups protecting vital interests of Steamboat have been selected as finalists for Awards for Excellence through the El Pomar Foundation.
Strings in the Mountains, Yampa Valley Land Trust, Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, Steamboat Springs Health Care Association, The Haven and Horizons Specialized Services were selected for their commitment to enhancing the quality of life of Colorado residents
"It's a real honor," said Kay Clagett, Strings in the Mountains President. "When recognized by the El Pomar Foundation, you're joining an elite group of non-profit organizations,"
Clagett said that the extraordinary amount of exceptional non-profit organizations in Steamboat Springs is gaining more notice all the time.
Strings in the Mountains won the First Award for Excellence in the Arts from the Pomar Foundation in 1995. Horizons and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club have also been past recipients.
Organization representatives said the prestige of being selected as a finalist is a reflection of quality services being provided within the community.
"It's a tribute to our caring dedicated staff," said Sue Birch of the Visiting Nurse Association.
Organizations were nominated by El Pomar at an Outreach program Jan. 20 in Steamboat.
El Pomar commissioners met with non-profit organization representatives from northwestern Colorado.
Christine McKelvie, a representative for the Steamboat Springs Health Care Association, said attending the Outreach program provided them a wonderful opportunity to talk with with people within their own organization to evaluate the special services they provide. She said it was good to re-examine the integral importance of health care in Steamboat Springs and to focus on expanding and providing better services to the community and residents of the care center. After receiving the initial nomination, McKelvie said they were required to submit further information to the foundation, which would be the basis for selecting the award recipients.
The Awards of Excellence will be presented at a banquet Nov. 13.
