Haywhacker ends in showdown

— It all came down to the last three holes for Steamboat Springs golfer Jeff Franks on Tuesday.

Franks finished second overall in the Haywhacker Championships after bogeying the final three holes of the event and the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

"My putter just went sideways on me," Franks said of his late-round slide. "I three putted my last three holes."

Franks shot a round of 76 to win the 16-18 age division in the tournament. But after 18 holes, the Steamboat golfer found himself tied with 15-year-old Texan Sami Al-Awadi.

The playoff opened on the Haymaker's No.1 tee box. Franks bogeyed the 362-yard, par-4 hole. Meanwhile, Al-Awadi was able to overcome a poor tee shot and pulled out a par to win the event.

"I was pretty happy with the way I played but I wish I could have finished a little stronger," Franks said.

He added that he is coming off of an awesome summer and is already looking forward to the high school golf season. Franks will be a junior at Steamboat Springs High School this fall.
