Competitors limited at weekend track meet

— The Steamboat Sailors will be without nearly 25 members Saturday at the Rifle Invitational.

Only 13 Sailors are scheduled to compete in the event that starts at 8 a.m.

Those missing are on spring break or are on the injured reserve list, Sailors assistant coach Suzie Mefford said.

Ryan Wattles, who is on the 400- and 800-meter relay teams, is not at Rifle because two of his partners are on vacation.

Wattles is using the time to rest his knee, which he injured during football season.

The break, Wattles says, will enable his teammates an opportunity to be well rested before the district meet at Craig May 5.

"I think it will help us a lot," Wattles said.

"Going out on the track every day, we kind of burn out. When everyone comes back from vacation, they'll be ready to run."

Kyle Svendsen, Patrick McMahon and Derek Haverley are Wattles' teammates for the relays.

Svendsen and Haverley are in Mexico.

Twenty-one teams are at the meet, said Georgia Carter, Rifle athletic secretary.

Coaches and athletes will use the next two weeks to tuneup for regionals May 11 and 12 in Grand Junction.

That meet will determine which athletes will attend the state championships that are scheduled for May 18 and 19 in Jefferson County.
