Girls tennis team coming into their own

— The Steamboat Sailors No. 2 doubles team is peaking at just the right time.

With regionals starting in less than two weeks, Tara Weiss and Tiffany McGinn are playing their best tennis of the year.

"I think we're finally clicking," McGinn said. "We get along real well so that makes it real easy to tell each other what we're doing wrong right now.

"I think we're just ready for regionals, so we're just playing better later in the season."

Weiss and McGinn, who are 8-1 in dual matches, made it to the finals at a nine-team tournament in Mullen this past weekend. They ended up second in the No. 2 doubles division.

Mullen's Caitlin Finn and Paige Stapp defeated them in two sets in the finals.

"We were out to a 4-0 lead and we kind of just lost it," McGinn said. "And then they came back."

Finn and Stapp won the match, 7-5, 6-1.

Meagan Franks finished in third place in the No. 2 singles division after knocking off Kim Barberi of Montrose in the third/fourth-place playoff. Franks beat Barberi, 6-3, 6-2.

Kim Heckbert (No. 3 singles) was fourth place and Allison Griffing (No. 1 singles) was fifth. Ali Fisher and Kandra Sharp were seventh place in the No. 1 doubles division and Sarah Davey and Laura Varsafsky (No. 3 doubles) also were seventh.

Megan Mooney and Becca Herman placed sixth in the No. 4 doubles division.

Steamboat has two games this weekend, including a scrimmage against Poudre in Fort Collins. The team also will face Thompson Valley in Loveland, which is a make-up game from earlier in the year. Days and times for those matches will be announced later in the week.

Regionals are May 4 and 5 at Mesa State College in Grand Junction.

Sailors coach Carol Baily said the Mullen tourney was a good test for the players just before regionals.

"I think it was really good practice to just play against different people," Baily said.
