— It's tournament time for a pair of women's hockey teams from Steamboat Springs.

This weekend the Chix with Stix and Steamboat Storm will take the ice in search of titles at the 2001 Women's Association of Colorado Hockey's state tournament. The Chix will play in the "A" division and the Storm will battle for a title in the "B" division during the tournament which will be held at the Sun Microsystems Ice Center at the Promenade in Westminster.

The Chix are coming off of a 1-1 tie with Vail last Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena. The Chix scored first in that game when Diane Dwire netted a goal with some help from Jen Rose with 5:50 left in the first period.

The Chix would hold the lead until the third period when Vail scored with 6:25 remaining. The game went into overtime, but neither team would score.

This weekend the Chix will join the Rocky Mountain Rockets, Aspen MotherPuckers, Denver Bandits, Breckenridge Blizzard and the Vail Breakaways at the biggest tournament of the year. The Chix open Saturday against the Bandits at 2:15 p.m. The local squad will also face off against Aspen at 8:15 p.m. that night.

The Storm will play in the B division along with the Fort Collins Flames, Arapahoe Chill, Left Hand Brewery Brewsers, Northern Colorado Comets, DU Pioneers and Colorado Synergy. The "B" level women's team will also be looking for a change of fortune when it faces Synergy in the opening game at 10:15 p.m. Friday.

The Storm lost its final regular season game last Saturday at Howelsen Hill in a 4-0 contest against the DU Pioneers.

The team will also face the Chill at 3:45 p.m. and the Brewsers at 9:45 p.m. Saturday.

"We were a 'C' level team last year, so there were no state playoffs," Storm player Stacy Foster said. "This will be the first year this team has played in the state playoffs."

The format for both divisions is the same. Teams will be divided into pools and compete in a round robin on both Friday and Saturday. The top teams from each pool will advance
