Steamboat Springs High School students named to all-state ski teams

— Alpine skiers Stewart Beall, Joe Liefer, Andrew Porter-Merrill and Cassidy Kurtz found themselves in the spotlight at this year's Steamboat Springs High School ski team awards banquet.

All four of the skiers were named to the all-state ski teams for their outstanding results on the slopes this season. Beall, Liefer, Porter-Merrill and Kurtz were named to the first team giant slalom team. Beall also made the first team slalom squad and Porter-Merrill was named to the second team.

"It was impressive that the Steamboat team had so many skiers named all-state," skier Stewart Beall said. "It was a goal of mine at the start of the year. I wanted to get all-state since I switched over from skiing with the Winter Sports Club. I wanted to stay competitive at this level."

Steamboat was also recognized on the nordic team as Jessica Philip was named to the all state team and Austin Ross received an honorable mention.

"I was really pleased to be named to the all-state team," Jessica Philip said. "It's important because it reflects a whole season, not just one race."

Philip has received all state honors all three years she skied for the Steamboat team.

"It was a great way to end the season," the senior added.

The honors came after a strong season for the Steamboat team. The boys team took first place in the state in both slalom and giant slalom. The awards were just a small part of the team's annual ceremony in which many other skiers were also recognized.

Other awards included academic all-state nominations which were given to Kurtz, Mark Gillespie and Camilla Chase.

Head coach Chris Arnis also named the most valuable skier as JoJo Bucci. Arnis sited Bucci's willingness to ski both alpine and cross country in order to help his team as a main reason for the award. Bucci skied both events, despite being a alpine specialist, at the state meet to improve his team's standings.

Rebecca Herman was named the most improved after making big strides this season on the girls team.

The Sailors alpine ski team included Beall, Bucci, Chase, Chris Dombey, Kori Dooley, Gillespie, Gates Gooding, Tony Haight, Herman, Christian HoGrefe, Kurtz, Brittany Lamb, Liefer, Taylor Patterson, Porter-Merrill and Gunnar Sorensen. Key members of the nordic skiers included Austin Ross and Jessica Philip,

As a team the boys and girls alpine squads were honored as academic champions by the Denver Post. The boys maintained a 3.3 grade point average this season and the girls registered a 3.64. The girls nordic team was also recognized with a 3.80.

While Arnis was happy with his team's results this season he said he would like to see more skiers come out for the nordic teams in the future as well as the girls alpine team. He feels that with some more skiers in those area the Sailors will contend for the overall state title.

"It was a nice change from the Winter Sports Club," Beall said. "Skiing for the high school team is just a lot of fun."
