STEAMBOAT SPRINGSThe Steamboat Springs Board of Realtors is awarding its 26th annual college scholarships to high school graduates soon. The deadline for applications is April 30. Realtors will distribute funds to Routt County seniors for continuing their education. The scholarships are based on need, creativity, presentation, leadership in the community and a desire to continue education.

Kristin Kaufman, daughter of Steve and Marcia Kaufman of Steamboat Springs, was named to the dean's list at Columbia University for the fall semester of the 2000-2001 school year.

Kristin is a 1994 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School and a 1998 graduate of the University of Colorado with a degree in psychology. She will complete the requirements for a Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing in May.

Katie Markowitz of Steamboat Springs is spending the spring quarter in Siena, Italy, where she is studying Italian and Art History. Markowitz will travel in Europe during the summer and then return to the University of Oregon next fall as a senior majoring in International Studies.


Strings in the Mountains' free 2001 Youth Touring Program, "Cultural Rhythms," will present an assembly Wednesday to Strawberry Park Elementary students. For one week, the program will travel to Craig, Hayden, Meeker, Steamboat and Yampa to perform. "Cultural Rhythms" uses music and theatre to explore the origins of musical sound from the world and will demonstrate how musical sounds are produced. Children will learn how to make and play their own instruments from boxes, drainpipes, and other material.
